Sam Rashkin, R.A. is the Chief Architect, Building Technologies Program for the U.S. Department of Energy

As Chief Architect for the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office, his primary role is leading deployment of successful research for new and existing high-performance homes. In his prior position, he managed the growth of Energy Star for Homes from its inception in 1996 to more than 8,500 builder partners, over one million labeled homes, and over 25 percent market penetration nationwide. Mr. Rashkin has recently been recognized for his contributions to sustainable housing with the 2012 Hanley Award and authored a new book titled “Retooling the U.S. Housing Industry: How It Got Here, Why It’s Broken, and How to Fix It”.

John Tooley is one of the nation's most respected innovators in the area of building science technology. Recipient of Florida's Governors' Energy Award, Tooley has also been honored with the Energy Efficient Building Association's coveted Joule Award for his innovative contributions to the building industry.

Florida Power and Light distinguished Tooley for his valuable contributions to its Duct Leakage Program, which received the National Energy Award. He has received numerous commendations and has also been recognized for his participation in program design and training for some of the largest utilities and building programs in the nation.

Tooley has diagnosed and repaired over 5,000 residential buildings. He has participated in residential weatherization of more than 10,000 houses. He developed the standards and conducted the training for the design and implementation of the duct diagnostic and repair programs of both Advanced Energy and Florida Power.

Katrin Klingenberg is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS). PHIUS promotes the wide adoption of passive building principles in North America through specialized consultant training and certification, project and product certification, and educational efforts for building professionals and the general public.

Ms Klingenberg designed and built the very first home built in the United States using the European standard and design specifications in 2003. She has designed and consulted on numerous passive projects since across North America’s varied climate zones and has made proposals for the possible refinement of current passive house standards to North American climate zones. In addition to her executive role she is the lead instructor for PHIUS Certified Passive House Consultant training. In that role she directs curriculum. She also directs the technical and research programs of PHIUS, and is a licensed architect in Germany.

Steve Davis is an architect and Director of Sustainable Design at VMDO Architects, in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he oversees firm-wide sustainability efforts. Under Steve's direction, the firm has garnered numerous accolades for green building, including an American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment "Top Ten" Award. Steve has also helped the firm certify the Commonwealth of Virginia’s first three LEED Gold public elementary schools.

His most recent design for a construction trade school outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, broke ground in December 2011 and aims to achieve net zero energy and water usage.

Steve is a LEED-accredited professional who holds architecture degrees from the University of Virginia and Harvard University. He is currently a Director of the James River Chapter of the United States Green Building Council, and Chair of the Chapter's Charlottesville Branch. He is also a member of the Charlottesville Lunch Line Initiative--an alliance focusing on the transformation of local school food systems.

Paul Hutton is the founder of Hutton Architecture Studio and has dedicated his 33-year career to integrating educational facility design and sustainable building practices. He has been designing school projects since 1979 and has been daylighting them since 1982. He uses daylight as a primary tool to reduce energy use and to improve occupant well-being in all his projects. Among Paul’s notable school projects are the Aspen Middle School, Colorado's first LEED Gold public school, the American Academy School in Castle Pines North, numerous private schools, and the Institute for Science and Technology at Cherry Creek Schools.

Paul has been actively researching, publishing, and speaking on school design trends for nearly 30 years. He recently published research on Net Zero Energy Schools and the Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) movement in American education. In addition to practice and research, Paul is a long-time faculty member at the University of Colorado College of Architecture.

Paul has been a practicing architect in Colorado since 1980, is a LEED® Accredited Professional, and a member of the CEFPI. After two years as co-chair of the AIA’s Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) K-12 Subcommittee, he has moved onto the CAE board and will chair it in 2015. He attended Princeton University, and has graduate degrees in both Architecture and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia. He lives on a near zero energy, sustainable, ranch south of Denver with his wife and two Labrador retrievers.

Jonah Schein is the Technical & Certification Coordinator for New Homes at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense® Program. He has overseen the technical development and implementation of the WaterSense Single Family New Home specification as well as the new homes certification system since their inception. Prior to joining EPA in 2008, Mr. Schein served as the Director of Outreach for Earth Day Network (EDN) where he was responsible for a number of initiatives to promote water efficiency through green building strategies in the United States and Middle East. Mr. Schein holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Ethics and a Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs and Environmental Management from Indiana University as well as a Master of Science in Environmental Science from the Johns Hopkins University.

Eden Brukman is Vice President of the International Living Future Institute and co-author of Living Building Challenge 2.0. A licensed architect and recently named one of Portland's Forty Under 40, Eden has dedicated her career to incorporating socially and environmentally responsible strategies into design and construction. Since 1996, she has consulted on dozens of building projects and provided technical counsel to reform the objectives of public agencies and private organizations nationally and internationally. Eden was recognized as a finalist for the Buckminster Fuller Challenge in 2010 for her work on the Living Building Challenge, and now directs the program’s ongoing evolution and global deployment.

David Walls was named Executive Director of Sustainability Programs for ICC in August 2011. He is responsible for assisting efforts to secure adoptions of the International Green Construction Code, assisting with developing and enhancing green-related products and services, and leading outreach efforts to industry organizations.

Immediately prior to his appointment, Dave served as the Executive Director of the California Building Standards Commission since 2006. In this position, Dave successfully directed the adoption and publication of the 2010 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen), the first in-the-nation statewide green building code.

Prior to the Building Standards Commission, he served as an administrator with the Division of Codes and Standards for the California Department of Housing and Community Development. Additionally, Mr. Walls is a general contractor and has served as a code official in the building inspection divisions of two California cities.

Nate Kredich joined the U.S. Green Building Council in March 2008 as Vice President of Residential Market Development. Nate has over fourteen years of leadership experience in the building industry, touching diverse areas such as real estate finance, software, and production homebuilding. He is responsible for driving the USGBC’s programs around new and existing homes, as well as its market initiatives for the affordable housing sector. Since Nate joined the USGBC, the LEED for Homes brand has quickly gained ground throughout the residential market sector, with over 12,000 certified homes and over 40,000 additional homes awaiting certification.

Prior to USGBC, Nate spent five years working in production homebuilding as the chief operating officer and general manager of Creative Touch Interiors, a national provider of design and installation services that he helped sell to, and operate on behalf of, The Home Depot. Additional positions include corporate banking with Bank of America as well as the CEO of an interior design software company, where Nate helped build a searchable interior products database which helped design professionals gather information on sustainable products.

He is active in numerous residential sustainable projects and committees, including the Michael J. Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainable Building. Nate received his BBA from Emory University, and his MBA from The Darden School at the University of Virginia.

Amber Wood is the Energy Programs Manager for the NAHB Research Center.

As a leader in energy engineering for the NAHB Research Center, Amber Wood oversees engineering research projects focusing on the energy performance of residential construction and remodeling. She is primarily involved with DOE’s Building America program, which is a private/public partnership that develops energy solutions for new and existing homes. She also assists with the Energy Value Housing Award (EVHA) program.

Although Ms. Wood’s primary focus is energy efficiency, she has also been involved in green building through the National Green Building ANSI Standard Development. Ms. Wood continues to connect energy and green building in her work as builder, remodeler, and consumer interest increases.

Rick Schwolsky is editor-in-chief of Hanley Wood's ECOHOME magazine. He was formerly editor-in-chief of Tools of the Trade and El Nuevo Constructor, construction editor for BUILDER magazine, and Hanley Wood's project manager for The New American Home and the company's show homes built as part of The International Builders Show.

Before joining Hanley Wood in 1993, he spent 20 years as a custom homebuilder, retiring as president of Grafton Builders in Vermont. His work, starting in the 1970's, focused early on high-performance cold-climate homes and renewable energy systems, contributing to today's understanding of building performance, energy efficiency, and building science. In 1979 he was selected to help install the solar system on The White House in Washington, DC, and in 1982 he wrote The Builder's Guide To Solar Construction published by McGraw Hill. He is a long-time member of the National Association of Home Builders, and has won numerous national journalism awards for his construction writing.

Edward Mazria is an internationally recognized architect, energy expert, educator and author with a distinguished and successful career spanning 45 years. He is the Founder and CEO of Architecture 2030, a non-profit, non-partisan, solution-oriented organization. His comprehensive knowledge of design, planning, climate change and alternative energy sources are focused on a dramatic reduction of fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions generated by the Building Sector, as well as building and regional adaptation strategies for projected climactic and environmental changes.

Mr. Mazria has taught architecture at the University of New Mexico, University of Oregon, UCLA, and the University of Colorado-Denver. He is the author of numerous publications including the “bible” of solar energy, The Passive Solar Energy Book, and the influential article It’s The Architecture, Stupid!, published in 2003. His numerous awards include: AIA Design Awards, Commercial Building Awards from the Department of Energy, “Pioneer Award” from the American Solar Energy Society, Outstanding Planning Award from the American Planning Association, Landmark Designation Award from The Albuquerque Conservation Association, Equinox Award from Earth Alert, National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation, the inaugural Hanley Award from the Hanley Foundation and the Mumford Award from Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility.

He is a senior fellow of the Design Futures Council, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and founding member of the recently established National Academy of Environmental Design.

Bill Walsh, Healthy Building Network Founder and Executive Director, has provided the long-term vision since February 2000. Jack graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Texas and began working for BASF in 1989. Eric Corey Freed, LEED AP, Hon. FIGP, is Principal of organicARCHITECT, an architecture and consulting firm in California, with nearly 20 years of experience in green building.

Eric co-developed the Sustainable Design programs at the Academy of Art University and University of California Berkeley Extension. He is on the boards of Architects, Designers & Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR), Green Home Guide and West Coast Green, as well as the advisory boards of nearly a dozen other organizations.

Asa Foss is an expert in building science, home construction, and energy efficiency. At the US Green Building Council, he is responsible for the development of the LEED for Homes rating systems. He is active in developing national green building policy recommendations, and represents USGBC on numerous national home energy efficiency committees.

Prior to his current position, he designed and managed Maryland’s award winning Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. While running the program, he also spent time in the field training over 150 energy auditors and energy retrofit contractors.

Matt Belcher is an experienced builder/developer and nationally-recognized consultant, educator and author on the business of green building and development. He has been actively involved in the St. Louis area construction industry for three decades, including six years as a top building codes official. He founded Belcher Homes in 1993, specializing in building energy efficient, sustainable “green” homes and light commercial construction and development management using low-impact, ecologically conscious development practices. Mr. Belcher was the 2007 President of the Home Builders Association of St. Louis and Eastern Missouri. He has served on its Building Codes Committee for sixteen years including seven as Chairman. He chaired both the 2006 NAHB National Green Building Conference in Albuquerque NM and the 2007 Conference held in St. Louis, which is the nation’s leading educational conference on residential green building, remodeling and development. He was instrumental in helping to organize the St. Louis HBA’s award winning green building effort and has served as its chair for the past six years. He is also a member of the St. Louis Chapter of the US Green Building Council. In addition, he assists other HBA’s around the country in training and developing green building programs. This experience led him to organize and chair the Greening Midwest Communities conference in October 2010 to educate Builders, Remodelers, Municipal Officials and others associated with the industry to educate and promote the economic advantages of green building and development practices.

Mr. Belcher was elected by the Board of Directors of the International Code Council to serve on the Energy and Water Committee for development of the new ICC International Green Construction Code for the 2011 term.

In his role at Ideal Homes, McKown oversees sales, marketing, land development, and mortgage operations for the company. Jerry Yudelson, PE, MS, MBA, LEED AP, is the Principal of Yudelson Associates in Tucson, Arizona.

A licensed professional engineer, Jerry Yudelson is a former board member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and chaired the USGBC’s annual Greenbuild conference from 2004 through 2009. He was the Research Scholar for Sustainability for the International Council of Shopping Centers, providing research and speaking services for ICSC.
