BASF has a promotion on until the 12th -- an online Design Challenge Forum, add an idea for a chance to win and iPad '>http://bit.ly/b2OwIu

We are trying to engage the design build community in sourcing new ideas for Zero Energy School Construction and to better understand how you as a group define "embodied energy". The ideas get promoted and ranked. The top 5 idea generators are then entered into a drawing for 2 iPads. (P.S. there are great odds right now because we have had little traffic.) It's easy, fun and who doesn' t want an iPad? Here's what you do --

1. Pick a Topic

- School Design Challenge. What’s the best way to get to 80% energy savings when designing a K-12 school?

- Embodied Energy: Should embodied energy be a central design consideration in your day-to-day design practices?

It works like this blog except you can win an iPad (am I repeating myself?)

- Posting your own comments in a thread
- Giving other comments a thumbs up or thumbs down
- Creating a new thread

Give it a try and let us know what you think.

  • Corky Bradley Smaller footprint, tight envelope ('shrink-wrap' your building), then you can downsize the HVAC equipment and/or buy better, more efficient equipment. Proper Daylighting will reduce lighting loads and make a better environment for the occupants.

  • Tina Soo Hoo Completely agree that a tight building envelope including windows which tends to get lost due budget. Also high efficiency HVAC is very important and also gets lost typically due to tight budgets.

  • Cheryl Ciecko Embodied energy should not be defined by consensus as a group, but rather through a scientific process such as Life Cycle Assessment. Through LCA, materials are evaluated from resource extraction through the life of the material in terms of energy and other impacts on the environment such as air quality, water quality, acid rain etc. Tools are available to consider this such as BEES 4.0, available through NIST, or the Athena Institute's Eco Calculator. Also consider Corrim (www.corrim.org).

  • Dennis Jaglinski What’s the best way to get to 80% energy savings when designing a K-12 school? Go green by using recycled products, concrete insulated panels, installing solar panels to recapture the sun's energy, high efficient HVAC units, a thermal blanket around structure, and motion detectors to monitor the use of electricity such as lights.
