High Function, Low Energy: Enhance Green Building Performance

Whether the goal is an ENERGY STAR® home, green building certification, or simply meeting the demands of increasingly eco-savvy consumers, the process of designing, building, and remodeling homes is more complex than ever. As builders, architects, and remodelers strive simultaneously to please their clients and adopt widely embraced carbon-neutral practices, there is little margin for error.

Understanding window technology choices can add up to long-term cost savings for clients, establish building professionals as “thought leaders,” and avoid the reputation-damaging callbacks resulting from leakage, deterioration, and poor thermal performance.

Here’s why it is so important:

1. Consumers are willing to pay $17,000 more for an average-costing ($292,000) home if it contains green features such as windows, according to a study by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), an international organization that regulates property professionals and surveyors
2. According to SBI Energy, an industrial market research firm, from 2009 – 2013 the energy-efficient home renovations market will grow 15%-50% faster than the renovations market as a whole – to a total of $35Billion in 2013

  • Sowmya Gogineni Hi Chance, That is a great question! It really is region specific right now. Pricing is always an important consideration, but in California, we are seeing a big push on "Green". With the CALGreen building code, there are now mandatory requirements for contractors and builders to follow. "Green" will be a big driver for you.

  • Samantha Smith Not sure I am a big supporter of government mandates. What happened to responding to a demand or creating a demand rather than forcing it? High function, low energy...that is common sense...you don't need government mandates.
