A deck should be for cooking out, getting fresh air, and enjoying time with friends and family – not a time-consuming addition to your home “to-do” list.

Composite decking does not need painting or sealing, so can help make “deck time” mean relaxation and fun, not work. Before breaking out the burgers and beverages, though, a few simple actions can help keep your composite deck looking its best for years:

Remove dirt and debris
After heavy pollen seasons – typically twice per year, or as needed – remove dirt and debris with a broom. Sweep the deck surface and between individual boards. While some composite decking is made with mold inhibitors, the best way to prevent it is to keep the deck free of pollen, leaves and debris.

Use an eco-friendly deck cleaner
Before cleaning a composite deck, refer to the manufacturer’s literature for specific instructions. Environmentally conscious deck cleaners like Corte Clean® composite deck cleaner or Concrobium XT Eco-Wash™ can be sprayed on the deck and washed off with a garden hose or used with a power washer. Deck cleaner is recommended to ensure that all pollen, dirt and debris are removed, including small particles that are not visible.

Use a pressure washer properly
A pressure washer typically can be used on composite decking as long as it has a fan tip blade with no more than 1300 PSI. To prevent damage to the deck boards, the nozzle should be held at least 8-10 inches from the surface.

Get rid of stains
Deck brighteners with oxalic acid can help eliminate any water spots or rust stains, while household degreasing agents (such as dishwashing detergent) can help remove oil and grease left over from your last cookout.
