As our world grows, civilization is on a never ending quest for resources to meet our needs. Unfortunately, many of our natural resources can't easily be replenished. In order to continue meeting our growing needs, new sources are required to replace the natural resources that have a finite or limited supply. Many of these new sources will be made from Bio-based materials.
The combination of Bio-based materials (materials produced from renewable resources that are biotic in nature) and renewable resources (easily replenished and originated from living organisms) allows for a responsible cycle of use and reproduction of the materials. Bio-based materials can be used to create renewable sources to form the foundation of bio-based products.
Bio-based products are defined by the International Code Council as:
A commercial or industrial product used in site development or building construction that is composed, in whole or in significant part, of biological products, renewable agricultural materials (including plant, animal, and marine materials), or forestry materials.
While not limited to building products, bio-based products represent opportunities to lessen the burden on dwindling non-renewable natural resources. In order to become a viable alternative to conventional products, bio-based products will be required to meet industry standards.
Further developments in bio-based material will produce products that not only meet industry standards, but will also support a sustainable future.
