What is the greenest roofing product available?

I have seen on multiple TV shows, in architectural magazines and online many homes that claim to be green when they have asphalt shingles on them. How could this be considered green when the roof is made of something that is made from oil and only lasts 15 to 20 years, then having to be replaced and ending up in landfills? I've also seen a lot of metal roofs touting they are so green because they are energy efficient with reflective surfaces, which I agree is better, but the manufacturing of steel is so energy intensive with so much pollution in the process, not to mention how far it needs to be transported to the get the home it is put on, creating even more pollution. Green is full of so many distorted perceptions, it can be hard to see the forest from the trees.

  • Bill Danos I can't tell you how green this roofing material is but I sure like the concept. Tile from Boral Roofing that takes pollution caused by cars and converts it into fertilizer that gets washed off your roof to add nutrients to your gardens. http://www.proudgreenhome.com/article/181332/Smog-eating-tile-arrives-in-California

  • Robert Fejdasz The national Green Energy Council has approved only one roofing product in The United States. It is FFR Global's K-1. To learn more feel free to check out our web site at www.ffrglobal.co. We are more than willing to assist Contractors to use K-1 and become Green roofing Contractors. We can also use oneof ou Contractors to give you a Green, Energy Saving Roof. If you hear someone talk about their product as if it is a 'Green' product there are some simple ways to tell.

  • Robert Fejdasz A typo in my last message; I meant International Green Energy Council. Here are some products that can NEVER be green. Salesmen and Contractors often lie so do your due diligence: Petroleum, Rubber, Tar, Plastic, EPDM, TPO, Emulsion, Bull, Acrylics. But it is important to remember a true green roof does not have to be heavy and organic and should be reflective and energy saving unless you like wasting money on AC.
